Can untame birds be tamed?
« on: November 22, 2006, 07:05:50 AM »
Birds that have not been hand tame can still be tamed.  What I do is I get a pair of gloves, and I gently hold the bird to my chest so it can hear my heart beat.  I do this everyday for about 5-10 minutes at first, the more often you do this the better, after about 2-3 weeks the bird will learn to trust you and you won't have to wear the gloves and you will be able to begin the "up" command.  I just lightly place my hand over the bird, so it can't wiggle away or flap its wings.  it will soon calm down. 8)

be careful, if in hands is painful and our hands have thicker skin, how about the chest, ouch that hurts!

I have used BK's method with birds that are not that social when I first get them or with my babies as they are starting to get a little shy. They normally don't try and bite me just want to wiggle loose.

I allow them to wiggle free but then place them right back on my chest. If they are stilling still and letting me pet their neck or head then I give them a little piece of food and this generally helps them calm quicker.

That is a good idea. I never would have thought of the heatbeat helping.

I don't know about that, He was pretty scared when I took those pics. I just couldn't use Bamboo because she would have biten the day lights out of me.

Marley is sweet, he needs a little work but he could be a really sweet bird. Unfortunately he is very much bonded with Bamboo. Which doesn't bother me, they have each other. It is quite sweet actually.
